Sources: Pacers, Brian Shaw to discuss assistant job

After striking out in three opportunities to fill the head coaching vacancy with the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors this offseason, former Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw is setting his sights back on the assistant ranks.

Shaw is scheduled to interview with the Indiana Pacers early this week for an associate head coach position, according to multiples sources with knowledge of the situation.

The Indianapolis Star was the first to report that Shaw would meet with interim head coach Frank Vogel and team president Larry Bird.

Shaw started his career with the Boston Celtics in 1988 and was a teammate of Bird's. Shaw previously interviewed with Indiana in 2007 for their head coaching vacancy that eventually was filled by Jim O'Brien.

Vogel, 37, is expected to be hired as the full-time head coach, making him the youngest person manning the sidelines in the league. Shaw, 45, would bring with him the experience of winning two championships in seven years as an assistant with the Lakers under Phil Jackson, as well as three championships in 14 seasons with Boston, Miami, Orlando, Golden State, Philadelphia, Portland and L.A.

NBA owners, players swap proposals, to meet Friday

Saying it reflects a “desire to go as far as we can to avoid a lockout,” NBA Commissioner David Stern revealed Tuesday that owners have moved off their insistence on a hard salary cap.

Players don’t see it that way.

So it appears the cap system remains as the biggest obstacle to a new collective bargaining agreement before the rapidly approaching June 30 deadline.
