Tour packages set for Asean delegates to promote Cebu, nearby provinces

Cebu City (18 October) -- Maximizing the presence of foreign visitors in Cebu , travel agencies are offering pre and post tour packages for Asean Summit delegates wanting to unwind before or after the event.

Tourism Usec. Phineas Alburo disclosed that the National Organizing Committee for the 12th Asean Summit with private sector arrangement is coming out with two packages selling pre and post tours as part of promoting the country's tourist attractions. Foreign visitors that want to explore Cebu and beyond to nearby provinces like Bohol and Davao City may just access the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for the detailed information.

There are six travel agencies in Cebu that have been accredited by the DFA offering the same tour packages and the same rates, this was bared.

Though the participants to the summit are here for official business, the tourism industry can also take advantage of the opportunity to showcase the tourist attractions found in the Philippines , Alburo said.

Alburo further said that even if the summit is done in Cebu, the benefits will be spread out through tourism as under Pres. Arroyo's 'Super Regions' concept, Central Philippines - Super Region that includes the whole Visayas Region will concentrate on strengthening the country's tourism industry.

The tourism official likewise stressed that with Cebu 's 42 direct international flights a week is a plus factor to promote the province, as accessibility is very important in the tourism industry. This is a good time to promote the rich culture of Cebu, its pristine beaches, less pollution and a relatively favorable peace and order climate as serious crimes like kidnapping is basically not a problem although Alburo admitted that petty crimes like hold-up and snatching is a growing concern.

Inspection of Cebu City establishments to begin next week in preparation for Asean Summit

Cebu City (18 October) -- Two teams from the Cebu City Health Office and the Office of the Building Official (OBO) will start inspecting establishments in Cebu City starting next week in compliance with sanitary and building measures as part of the city government's preparations for the coming 12th Asean Summit.

Nagiel Banacia, the city's public information officer bared that establishments to be inspected include the hotels, restaurants, karaoke bars and other nightspots.

Environmental sanitation is very important as the teams will check on the general housekeeping and the different establishments' water system of which a sample will be taken to the laboratory to ensure that the water is safe, according to Banacia.

The OBO on the other hand, will examine each building whether this is equipped with the necessary fire escape, the needed elevators and escalators for some establishments among others, Banacia said.

"Cleanliness is very basic and we are doing this as part of the city's preparations for the Asean Summit as we want the guests to be comfortable during their stay here in Cebu City," Banacia claimed.

Tourism Usec. Phineas Alburo disclosed that there are 37 hotels and resorts ranked from de luxe, 1st class to triple-A standards in the cities of Cebu and Lapulapu where the delegates are billeted.

Alburo said their office has sent validation teams to inspect the respective hotels and resorts where the delegates will be staying to determine whether these establishments have the necessary amenities on par with the standards of their classification.

In case the report of the teams that conducted the inspection showed deficiencies of any establishment, they will be given time to correct these deficiencies or else they will be drop from the roster of hotels and resorts included for the accommodation of the summit delegates, Alburo stressed.

Establishments that are remiss of the needed measures under the sanitary and building guidelines are given notices to comply while failure to do so after a given time means their sanitary and building permits are subject to revocation, Banacia warned.

Banacia said all the establishments that have complied with the sanitary and building measures will be given a certificate of inspection while these establishments will be included in the list of establishments recommended for the delegates printed in the media guidebook. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)

Marco Polo Hotel (formerly Cebu Plaza Hotel) is all set for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in December.

Hotel sales manager Arabella Barz told Sun.Star Cebu that the hotel is not accepting bookings anymore, except for delegates to the summit, for Dec. 1 to 15, as instructed by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“All the hotels in Cebu, including Marco Polo, will be used exclusively by the delegates of the Asean for security reasons. No other guests could use the rooms and other facilities during the entire period,” she said.

She said Marco Polo Hotel expects delegates to start arriving Dec. 4.

Marco Polo Plaza Hotel opened last Oct. 6 its Continental Club, located at the topmost floor of the hotel.

The Continental Club is designed to cater to the various needs of executive guests of the hotel, said Marco Polo Plaza public relations manager Carlo Borromeo.

Conceptualized as a hotel within a hotel, the club features 101 guest rooms and suites.

Marco Polo Plaza, owned by Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co., is being managed by international Hong Kong-based hotel group Marco Polo.

The hotel has 329 guestrooms and suites.
