Tallo leaves Ateneo: Right or Wrong Move?

Macmac was never officially enrolled. He never submitted his HS transcripts so he was never issued official student papers.

IF I were a conspiracy theorist I would wonder why a student who was going to get a scholarship not submit his transcripts/finish his enrollment. The day he left for Cebu was the week of the OrSem/Orientation Seminar Week which is required of all Freshman (inc Tallo and Ravena), all other students would have been enrolled at this point. Yet his papers (HS transcript of all things) were not yet submitted.

IF I were a conspiracy theorist murag dugay na gi-huna huna mulakaw gikan Ateneo. Maybe the free training in the US (enrolment in that training course I hear is >P60K exclusive of plane fare and accomodation, Kahibao ko ni hangyo si papa Tallo na i-apil siya sa trip/budget. I don't know kung nadayun ba to) and free trip for the exhibition game to Dubai were not enough?

That puts a whole new meaning to the whole story. If what ur saying is true, medyo questionable gyud ang papa ni tallo. Mahulog naka benefit sila sa trips, training etc unya wala gyud diay to intention mu enroll sa admu? Sad to hear if this is true kay taga cebu raba ni sila.

The last few posts of this thread further strengthen the theory nga apurado gyud si Tallo. Or at least iyang dad.

Forcoach norman to say nga tallo was after instant stardom,there had to be a point where either mark or his dad asked coach norman for playing time.

Its confusing sad nga sa earlier part sa iyang statement. Did norman promise the dad specifically when he was going to field his son sa mga games?

My guess is na insulto lang gyud ang dad kay he expected nga duwa dayon iyang anak.. He had different expectations unya when he was disappointed, mao na to nga iya gi ingnan iya anak nga balhin nalang ta lain school.

Ako ang opinion ha putting taga Cebu/Cebuano/probinsyano in the equation is very childish. Sa unang panahon ra siguro na oi karon wala naman siguro ingon ana nga mentality sa basketball.

Next yr inig graduate ni monfort, tiongson nalang unta ug si tallo... For sure maka duwa na na sya. I think tallo should be better than chiongson so wala ta kahibaw... Basin starting lineup na unta siya.

For the record, I never wished for instant stardom for my son and we never asked for specific minutes of playing time.

He didnt ask for Specific minutes... But he did ask that his son be given playing time... Obviously.

I never even took part in the negotiation when my son was recruited to the ADMU team.

It was Mr. Jack Huang (ADMU alumni president-Cebu chapter, and respected alumni in Manila) who relayed to me the information regarding their plan for my son if he joins ADMU. Jack Huang's said that Coach Black would use Mac-Mac as soon as possible because Emman Monfort was set to graduate last March.

does as soon as possible mean right away during the pre-season tournaments? Monfort is still in the rotation pa man... Its his last yr na so cant you give him his due playing time?

When I went to Manila together with the CEC Dragons, Coach Black told me that he will really use Mac-Mac because of the departure of Monfort, but he did not specify any playing time. He insisted on using Mac-Mac because they will have no point guard this school year. Honestly, Coach Black has so many unfilled promises to my son.

My son was left sitting on the bench most of the time, even against the weakest of teams that they were playing during the pre-season games (Fil-Oil and Fr. Martin's Tournament).

He was not even included in the practice rotation. I was in Manila last June 3 to 5, and Coach Black did not talk to me regarding my son's situation. I asked Paulo Trillo (ADMU team amanger) for his status and all he told me was that my son is OK.

On June 6, before the game against Mapua, Coach Black said words to my son about his impatience for instant stardom and that he should wait for everyone to graduate before he gets a chance to play on the court. My son felt insulted and embarrassed, so right after the game, he packed up his things and left. Where were Coach Black's promises about husing him, I will never know.

Coach promised to use him when maka graduate na ang uban players... Monfort specifically. This is not uncommon for freshmen not to be able to play sa ilang 1st yr. Especially if di pa sila suwito sa system. Also, pre- season pa gud.... Grabe kaayo ka impatient.

The administration keeps contacting us even up to now for Mac-Mac's return to ADMU. As of the moment, we have offers from other teams in Manila but we have to settle this issue with ADMU before we choose what university is best for my son.

to the father of tallo, with what ur doing, ur creating a lot of pressure on your son. He will be the target of criticism sa uaap because of your actions. Its unfair to put that kind of pressure on him at his age. It might affect his confidence as a player because the whole uaap leagues eyes are on him ala lebron james' decision.

Mga huna huna ra na nako because I just find it strange na the the lack of being enrolled was due to lack of submission of documents by the Tallos. Kung sure na gyud sila mu-enrol ang transcripts na hatag na unta way before the Orsem.

I wonder how the dad feels about the expenses incurred by the Alumni and Administration in Tallos training. Ambi siguro nila murag tubig ra ang kwarta para sa Ateneo program. Only players assured of a slot in the men's varsity-Team A ang gigastuhan para maka train/ma-expose sa competition. Daghang star sa HS level na hantud Team B ra guyd ma-abot sa Ateneo. Dili sila ka adto sa tarining sa US.

If you go through the entire thread and the smorgasbord of posts from all parties, you can really say that Cebuano support is on a whole different plane. With the kind of rabid, foaming-in-the-mouth sense of support we Bisdaks have for our kababayans you'd think we are all fruits of the same loin!

It's totally understandable how people feel that Mark Jayven is throwing away such a big opportunity by quitting the team. As if getting the chance to attend one of the finest institutions in the country for college (and for free) isn't enough, he also had a slot on a 3-peat champion team that could also very well be the Beatles (or ______ insert name of modern-day in-vogue rockstar/group) of Philippine collegiate hoops. People would kill for either of those options and yet here was Mark Jayven who had both given to him but who has now decided that he doesn't want any part of it. What an outrage, right?

While a lot of very solid points have been made by the pro-Ateneo side of the metaphorical fence, given all that we know and all that has been released to us basketball junkies, I have to say that you have to respect the decision made by the Tallos. Perhaps it was not the best one, but it's still a good choice because it was made with Mark Jayven's basketball future in mind. Yes, he shouldn't have left Loyola the way he did. He shouldn't have burned the bridge. We don't know if there were any ulterior motives involved in this saga, but what it ultimately boils down to is that Mark Jayven skipped town MAINLY because he did not get the playing time he WANTED (we don't know for sure if he was PROMISED PT but the point is, he wanted to play). That reason should be good enough. He's a baller, he was born to shoot hoops. To be denied that chance after committing to a school he thought shared his vision of playing on the brightest stage should be frustrating. It may have been a rash decision, but Ateneo should've seen it coming. Knowing it wouldn't be able to accomodate Mark Jayven's talent, the team brass shouldn't have pursued him in the first place.

Ateneo is to today's UAAP what UV used to be in the CESAFI/CAAA in that they would hoard all the best crop of talent year in and year out even if they knew they couldn't possibly give all of them the same exposure and shine. They're practically an All-Star team of Juniors phenoms, most of the guys on the team were highly-touted recruits coming out of HS. Ateneo can afford to reel in all those big fish because today's kids and their parents are smart, they know what an Ateneo degree (and more importantly, an Ateneo connection or network) can do for their boys once they hang their sneakers. That's not to mention all the perks that come with being a Blue Eagle: instant fame on that campus on a hill in Katipunan, training in the US, allowances, the budget for Nike/adidas apparel, the girls! (Jobe Nkemakolam should know) etc.

What Mark Jayven's decision has done (aside from inspiring the wrath of Ateneans among other things) is that it has set a precedent to future prospects that Loyola isn't the only choice out there. If you insist on going to Katipunan for fine education, go a little further to Diliman and play for State U. And ultimately, what it will do is level the playing field. Talent won't stockpile in one place only to rot, and the UAAP will be more competitive than ever. Everybody wins.

If he waited until Norman Black decides that he's ready, it might already be too late. I for one don't totally buy Coach Norman's excuse of "not being ready". I am close friends with Oping Sumalinog from way back in elementary. He made the team as a freshman as well, just like Mark Jayven. We had a conversation back in 2008, his sophomore year, when Ryan Buenafe and Nico Salva first came into the program. Oping said that in practice, he would outplay both freshmen and yet those two guys still got the coach's nod over him. Yes, Buenafe and Salva are great players but I have full faith in Oping's skills too and I believe that he was telling the truth about outplaying them. He said he even thought of moving back to Team Glory B so he wouldn't waste his playing years. He has been a soldier, and yet up to now he still hasn't gotten the heavy minutes. Of course, Oping also likes it in Loyola and perhaps that's why he never thought of bolting out of the school but you can't say that Mark Jayven should share Oping's mentality. They're different players in different circumstances. Oping isn't the only one too, I think someone mentioned somewhere along this thread about Estoesta and Nin Ramz where Nino went home to USC while Estoesta got to "play" only one year in Team A, nailed to the end of the bench in what was considered a "dark age" for Ateneo basketball.

Sure, laugh at Mark Jayven, call him crazy for refusing an Ateneo education. But you have to give him props for showing he has balls and that he isn't intimidated by the glamour of playing for Ateneo. All he wants is to play ball, don't hate him for that.

Any updates on where Mark Tallo will be playing now?

I hope for his future that he won't be handcuffed by the residency rules as people in other forums are saying.

I would love to see him in State U or even at DLSU. It's beginning to be predictable with ADMU or FEU getting the best players.
