The Bhagavad Gita may be a part of the Mahabharata sir, but the instructions in the Bhagavad Gita pertains to an individual's duty in life, what an individual should be doing, for whom his actions should be offered to, how one should live one's life, etc. In short, what an invidual's purpose in life is. I'll quote Srila Bhaktivedanta Svami as to what the Bhagavad Gita is:

"Just what is the Bhagavad-gitä? The purpose of Bhagavad-gitä is to deliver mankind from the nescience of material existence. Every man is in difficulty in so many ways, as Arjuna also was in difficulty in having to fight the Battle of Kuruksetra. Arjuna surrendered unto Sri Krsna, and consequently this Bhagavad-gitä was spoken."
