People bewildered by dandruff product ingredients might be relieved to try vinegar, a familiar household item. While white vinegar is commonly found in household cleaners (and has a strong smell), apple cider vinegar has gentler fumes and is a popular folkloric remedy for dandruff. Although apple cider can be taken internally, for the purposes of treating dandruff, it can be applied directly to affected skin.

    About Dandruff
Dandruff ranges in intensity from a few dry (whitish) flakes to clumps of oily skin, which are yellow because of the oil). Dandruff might coincide with red and irritated skin or other skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis. While skin regeneration is ongoing and normal, dandruff represents an abundance of skin cells. It's a repair system gone awry.

    Causes for Dandruff
The National Institutes of Health describes dandruff as a combination of overabundant oil and yeast (malassezia), both of which are present on healthy skin. In optimal balance, the yeast controls (eats) the oil produced by the hair follicles, so the hair is glossy and elastic without being overly oily. However, because of hormonal changes, stress, diet or environmental factors, the yeast can multiply, according to the Mayo Clinic. Overabundant yeast can strip the oil from the skin, leading to dry and irritated skin and a hyperactive regrowth process.

    Vinegar's Effect on Dandruff
Ph refers to a chemical scale ranging from most acid (0) to most alkaline (14). While vinegar products vary in pH number because of ingredients and manufacturing, all vinegar is acidic. Healthy skin is also slightly acidic, notes the National Skin Care Institute. However, skin- and hair-care products can be quite alkaline and destroy the skin's pH balance. You can use litmus paper to test the pH balance of products for themselves. Vinegar can be a simple home remedy for restoring the acidic quality of the skin.

    About Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is the most common vinegar used for dandruff. It is made by pulverizing apples and using only the liquid, which is fermented twice. The vinegar is available unfiltered and unpasteurized and is used primarily for health care purposes, rarely for cooking. Although it has a slight fruity smell, cider vinegar can still irritate the eyes and should be applied with caution.

Using Apple Cider Vinegar for Dandruff
Apple cider vinegar can be used before shampooing or as a leave-in hair rinse. Before using apple cider vinegar as a topical remedy, individuals should apply a small amount to the skin and wait 15 to 20 minutes to confirm there are no skin allergies. If you have no skin discomfort or sign of irritation, 2 tbsp. of the vinegar can be applied directly on the scalp for a minimum of 15 minutes and up to three hours before washing, suggests the website health911.com. Alternatively, individuals can make a hair rinse by mixing 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of warm water, notes the website apple-cider-benefits.com. Pour the mixture along the scalp carefully, making sure to avoid the eyes. Let the hair air-dry, or use a hair dryer on the coolest setting possible, to avoid further injury to the skin. The strong vinegar smell will fade once the hair is dry.
