First thing you need to do is throw away your scale. Instead, invest on a good heart rate monitor that also tells you how much calories you burn. The More you exercise = more muscle mass. As you gain muscle mass you're gonna gain weight (at least for the first several weeks). Muscles weigh more than fat. If you want to just tone up try cardio exercises. Running, treadmill, elliptical, swimming, bicycling - those are all good. Change your exercise routine every few days. Watch what you eat. No more junk food. Someone here mentioned P90X. I've tried it. I didn't do the whole program though. I just did the cardio exercises (Plyometrics, Cardio X, Kenpo and Yoga).
I'm serious about not weighing yourself for the first 3-4 weeks. Try going by how you feel. You know your body better than anyone. The more you exercise the more you'll notice that you're not as heavy, you move better, you're clothes fit better...If you really need to put numbers on it, try using a heart rate monitor. I can burn 700-800 calories for an hours worth of cardio. Not bad.
