Renegade Philippine police officer to be extradited from Malaysia

A renegade Philippines police officer believed responsible for the deaths of 14 people in a raid on a police camp 17 years ago will be repatriated from Malaysia to stand trial.

Rizal Ali fled to Malaysia after leading a small band of disgruntled policemen and soldiers in an attack on the police camp in Zamboanga in 1989.

The siege was triggered by a feud between Ali and his superiors and resulted in the deaths of 12 of his supporters and two hostages.

Ali eluded a massive manhunt but was arrested in Malaysia, and sentenced to 14 years jail.

Philippines National police chief Arturo Lomibao says the 60-year-old Ali will now be flown back to Zamboanga to stand trial for the siege.
