@Saga: good post bai. read it and it seems we are just now reaping the fruits of what FDR and GMA did. i wonder how anyone could think that leaving control of oil prices to the private sector would actually benefit consumers in the end. don't they know that the focus of the private sector is profits?

one could argue that competition would have grown due to deregulation but, given the importance of oil, wouldn't it have been better to encourage competition via better government control rather than surrendering control entirely? another argument is politicization of petron. but that is an inherent problem of governance and isn't it stupid to give up government control of the oil markets because of this? isn't that like throwing out the baby with the bathwater?

"resource war" indeed, i think US is just taking advantage of this "war on terror" another good excuse to invade Iraq which is the world's 3rd largest oil producer. Their alibi was WMD, its been almost a decade and yet they found nothing but just juicy billion dollar contracts and of course the control of black gold flowing down to their pockets. I wonder sometimes how much greed would they want. But then again more greed equals to power.

even if Malacaņang stepped in and froze fuel prices, that is just a stop gap measure of the bigger problem at hand. and the freezing of fuel prices itself will create more problems as well. it is not beyond the capacity of the major oil players to reduce our much needed oil supplies. i think we already went through with this during the previous administration. GMA did freeze fuel prices and what happened? she backed down as soon as people forgot about the issue. GMA was full of b.s. posturing in my opinion.

my biggest problem with your posts is your "Abnoy"-blame-game. it isn't even that original and you are echoing the unreasoning opinion of many filipinos - which is blaming the most convenient person to blame and not thinking beyond your personal biases.

to anyone whose interests floats only at the surface of the problem, your argument would seem good. however, if you dig deeper, you'd see that what you are saying is not only wrong but also damaging because, instead of pointing people to where the problem actually lies and thus finding a solution to it by bringing more minds to the problem, you are distracting them with false conclusions.

the thing is what we really need as a country is a "thinking" population. it is actually what any country needs. you are not helping. please change, please help.
yet you seem to be biased AGAINST GMA. Sure she did freeze the price and then "backed" down. But you may be forgetting that she is an economist. she didn't back down coz people foget, she backed down coz she probably thought is was already ok to stop freezing the price coz its economically viable already for the prices to go up again.

and lowering the prices doesn't even mean that you freeze the prices. lowering the taxes will be a more viable option, but according to Malacanang... tax is more important to them.

@binarypill: you may seem to be civil with your words but you are reasonably correct.

@deathfox: youre blaming everything to pnoy which is i think easily to be blamed of, including why your pet was stolen
but this thing is global, are you still blaming Pnoy for the high fuel prices in the US? be reasonable nman bro

what we need to know is what really is the cause meaning we see it right at the source and not on the end side.

no im blaming it on Pnoy coz he has the power to actually do something about it... All he has to do is reduce the damn TAX on fuel imports. but he is more concerned about the collection rather than the welfare of the people he is collecting it from.

Increase in demand results to increase of oil production. Big oil companies overseas are increasing its production yearly resulting to deep sea explorations where untapped resources are yet to be discovered. Therefore the more we are dependent in oil, the bigger we expect to have an increase in our fuel prices.

Adding up to problems in fuel production are insurgencies in the middle east countries where oil is known for its abundance.
