MSI X48 Platinum: Four PCI Express x16 Slots
    http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3212&p=1

A Preliminary Look at Overclocking Results

Once we were able to overcome our initial difficultly clocking our quad-core QX9650 by manually adjusting the CPU's GTL voltages, we found that the board responded well to our demands for more speed. Our focus was on achieving a balanced, stable overclock at 400MHz FSB, using the highest multiplier that the board's power circuitry and our processor could reasonably handle. In the end we settled on 10x for an even 4GHz - this placed our memory at DDR3-1600 using the 2:1 divider. Although not reported by CPU-Z, our full-load CPU voltage at this speed was about 1.28V and the X48 Platinum had no issues supplying the necessary current in a stable fashion.

Our memory timings ended up being a little looser than we would have liked. After 2.00V the board's next higher memory voltage setting was 2.17V, a little more than we were willing to give our expensive DDR3 memory simply for the purpose of setting CAS 6 instead of CAS 7. We have already discussed with MSI the need for finer fidelity when setting a DRAM voltage above 2V.

Memory read performance is certainly on par with what we expect for our settings. We are able to determine that tRD is being set to 7 by the board at an FSB of 400MHz, two whole clicks looser than we would have liked when it comes to X48. This along with setting 1N would help the memory read performance to easily eclipse 10GB/s. Write speeds are also a little low; later we were able to determine that the write recovery time (tWR) we set in BIOS at 10 clocks was being ignored and the board was defaulting to 21T. Rest assured minor problems like these will be corrected before a shipping BIOS is released.

Adding options for tRD (MCH Read Delay) and a couple other key memory timings will go a long way improving the already good memory latency time. It should be possible with a little tuning to take this number below 50ns. This is where Intel systems start to feel truly fast. We look forward to working closely with MSI in making this possible.

Today's results are not intended as anything more than an early look at how MSI's X48 offering is shaping up on the clocking front. In early application testing, the board performs on par with current X38/X48 DDR3 offerings. In fact, at this point there are not any real performance differences between the P35/X38/X48/680i/780i boards at stock speeds. Any differences we have noticed come down to memory sub-timing settings and resulting performance increases that show up in benchmarks. For the most part, buyers in this market segment are usually more concerned about features and overclocking abilities rather that Office 2007 performance.

That said, we will report complete testing results in our upcoming X38/X48/780i motherboard round-up, which will be available right before Intel's official chipset launch in the latter part of February. We will bring you all the information needed in order to decide just which platform deserves your hard earned money.

It's liquid Nitrogen ready... no, really, it is!

You know you’ve got something to look at when the first thing you see is a bloody great heatsink on the Northbridge of a mainboard that’s so deep you could brew a decent cuppa in it. And that’s probably the most striking feature of the Blackops mainboard from Foxconn, a board so packed with features that it’s likely to become the clocking board of choice for beginners and record breakers alike. Using the Intel X48 chipset this board is simply a beast…

Now I know that sounds daft as surely an overclocking beginner would get lost on a board that’s suit the seriously techie, Nitrogen breathing, record attempting overclocking expert? Well, no, not really. What Foxconn has achieved with the Blackops board is a bit of kit as friendly as a Hooters barmaid, as extreme as naked snowboarder and as forgiving a Labrador puppy. Of course we’ve yet to test the board ourselves but the Foxconn overclocking evenagelist, Peter Tan walked me through some of the Blackops ‘all rounder’ features, which kinda has me thinking he might be right.

Overclock settings include 0.5x multiplier support for fine tuning 45nm-based Intel Core 2 processors, boot strap forcing via jumper, dual BIOS switching via jumper, CPU core voltage up to 2.440 volts in 12.5mV steps, CPU PLL to 2.440 volts, CPU VTT to 1.725 volts, four CPU GTL settings from -31 to +30 steps, and MCH to 2.395 volts.

Other X48 Black-Ops features include an audio riser card with EMI-shielded ALC885 codec, fully digital oversized voltage regulator, dual gigabit LAN, triple PCI-Express Graphics card support, and just about everything one would expect on a board that cost more than $300.

    Foxconn's Ultra ATX

Looking a little further into the future we found Foxconn's Ultra ATX platform. Ultra ATX answers the question "what do I do if I run out of slots" by adding three more slots so power-users won't run out. While traditional ATX boards can provide a maximum of seven slots, Ultra ATA tops out at ten.

Foxconn's Ultra ATX design uses two PCI-Express hubs to better direct traffic in multi-graphics systems. A liquid cooling kit routs across the Northbridge, two rows of VRM components, and the Southbridge, and Foxconn promises to further refine the inlet/outlet connections to allow mounting of either internal or external coolers.

Foxconn's Ultra ATX Motherboard supports four double-thick graphics cards with space left over for two more devices
