If you have many PCs, it is mainly use to share internet connections.
And it restricts new incoming connections from outside (internet) to connect to your PC.
It is like a one way connection start. But once connected, data traffic can flow back.

Router is used to connect two networks.

as an analogy: its like a physical brige. like the mactan brige connecting the islands..

Thats way cisco base there logo to the golden gate bridge of San FranCISCO.
