Pacman offers advice for Olympic success
MANNY Pacquiao has forayed outside of pro boxing and offered his view on why the Philippines has never won an Olympic gold medal despite the abundance of excellent athletes in the country.
“We have a lot of world champions in the professional level, but why can’t we gain a gold medal from the Olympics?” Pacquiao said in his column at philboxing.com
The closest the country had to ever winning a gold was in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when Anthony Villanueva captured the silver medal in boxing in the featherweight division when he lost to Stanislav Stepashkin of the Soviet Union and in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when boxer turned actor Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco took the silver medal in boxing in the light flyweight division.
Onyok is the brother of another Olympian, Roel Velasco, winner of a bronze medal in boxing in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Onyok went to the finals in the 1996 Olympics after defeating Rafael Lozano of Spain, but suffered a lopsided loss to Daniel Petrov of Bulgaria (19-6).
This was the last time the Philippines won a medal in the Olympics and Onyok was the only athlete who brought home a medal from the 1996 Olympics.
The Philippines only has an Olympic haul of nine medals; two silvers and three bronzes in boxing, two bronzes in swimming, and two bronzes in track and field.
Pacquiao said in his latest column that an athlete only needs three things to achieve his goal.
“Like what I’ve said in my past columns, an athlete needs to prepare in three aspects and these are physical, mental and most of all the spiritual aspect, that we can use especially for our future,” he wrote.
“If our athletes have these three aspects that I’ve mentioned, then 20 years from now, I think we can have changes and possibly we can produce gold medals in the Olympics. We will even be more known as competitive Filipino athletes.” He added.
Manny Pacquiao thinks that nothing has changed in the past years and unless there is a change in the way the Philippines will manage and train their athletes and unless we change the system, the Philippines will never get hold of a gold medal in the Olympics.
