Philippine broadcaster ABS-CBN is known for its network war with another local broadcasting company, GMA, that the two stations often pit against each other from their news to entertainment.
However, on Wednesday morning, ABS-CBN found a new competitor in CNN which is represented in the Philippines currently by Anderson Cooper. Reports said that ABS-CBN newsreader Korina Sanchez allegedly commented in her morning radio show that Mr Cooper did not know what he was talking about.
Here's Mr Cooper's report from Tacloban, the city badly battered by super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
n the 4 minute, 19 second video which has more than 55,000 hits in the few hours that it was posted on YouTube, Mr Cooper described what he saw as a desperate situation due to the lack of government presence in the badly battered city.
"There is nobody helping," Mr Cooper stated, although he acknowledged that the situation may be different in other areas.
Ms Sanchez, who reads the news for ABS-CBN's TV Patrol, reportedly said the CNN reporter does not know what he is talking about.
Immediately, netizens reacted to Ms Sanchez's negative comment, pointing out that while the CNN guy is in the fields, she is safely ensconced in her radio station, probably drinking brewed coffee while criticising Mr Cooper.
Others saw the ugly head of politics, more than rivalry for TV rating, because Ms Sanchez is the wife of Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who lost in the 2010 election for vice president. Mr Roxas originally vied for the presidency and had he won, that would have made Ms Sanchez the first lady.
The rant led to this parody.
However, Mr Roxas gave way to Benigno Aquino III and agreed to slide down to the VP post, but lost to Opposition candidate Jejomar Binay. Despite his loss, many Filipinos believe Mr Roxas is eyeing the presidency for 2016 and his high profile status in calamities is one way he could gain more votes in the next national election and make Ms Sanchez the first lady.
Many Filipinos actually like Mr Roxas, but dislike Ms Sanchez because of her dominant and strong personality, and she in her another Imelda Marcos in the making due to her perceived vanity and air. She also had been accused several times of abusing her domestic helpers.
A Facebook post by Karen Lee Viudez-Panela captures what many Filipinos think of Ms Sanchez:

On Twitter, many Filipinos took Mr Cooper's side and chided the first lady-wannabe.
Joseph ivo Aguinaldo boldly declared:
"Cooper is credible than Korina."
Edward Martin tweeted,
"The nerve of Korina Sanchez to say Anderson Cooper doesn't know what he's talking about. Get out of your comfy studio to see the real thing."
Chris Abiera echoed Mr Martin's thoughts, while Caleb saw political motives behind her statement.

ABS-CBN will surely defend Ms Sanchez from the flak she would get from her statement, but it would likely linger in the minds of Filipinos, similar to how they reacted when a Canadian teacher made a racist remark against the typhoon-battered nation.

Anderson Cooper’s report irks Korina Sanchez
MANILA, Philippines—The CNN report on the victims of Super Typhoon “Yolanda” by its acclaimed reporter, Anderson Cooper, drew positive reactions on social media, saying it’s simple portrayal of the aftermath showed the real “miserable” situation of what was considered “ground zero” of the devastation.
Aired on Wednesday (Manila time), the report had Anderson describing the situation at the Tacloban airport, where many evacuees keep on waiting for relief and flights to get them out of the city.
But this drew the ire of local anchor Korina Sanchez. In her early morning radio show, she was quoted as saying: “Itong si Anderson Cooper, sabi wala daw government presence sa Tacloban. Mukhang hindi niya alam ang sinasabi niya. (This Anderson Cooper, he said there is no government presence in Tacloban. It seems he doesn’t know what he is saying.)
Sanchez reaction was lambasted by netizens, saying she doesn’t have the right to criticize Cooper or his report because she’s only doing an anchor’s job, comfortably in the air-conditioned newsroom. Whereas Cooper is reporting live on the scene.
Others can’t help but associate her being the wife of Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who reportedly said to the media that the situation in Tacloban and nearby areas is now under control.
This proved to be contrary to what Cooper had reported the same day.
In the said report, Cooper interviewed a woman he met on the street. A certain Jovelyn Taniego had lost her husband and six children during the storm surge. She was the only one in her family who survived. She found her husband’s body and three of her six children. With no place to bury, their bodies are now left on the ground.
She showed Cooper their rotting corpses that she covered with leaves, torn clothes and wood she found on the street as she waits for help. As for her three children, she told Cooper she’s lost hope in finding them alive.
Asked by Cooper where she’s going to spend the night, Taniego said, “in the street. I [really] don’t know where to go.”
Another victim Cooper interviewed was Juanito Martinez, who lost his wife and two children. Anderson let Martinez use his satellite phone to call his mother in Manila. Martinez cried as he told her what happened to his family.
In a later report, Anderson said it’s already the fifth day after the super typhoon struck Tacloban and he thought he’s already late. He said he expected at least a feeding center where survivors could line up but they are still at a loss where to find the next day’s meal.
Cooper summarized his report with the phase, “Here, misery is beyond meaning.”
In the same day, he tweeted via his official account, Anderson Cooper 360° @AC360:
“Everywhere you go you find people searching for their lost loved ones” @

Reacting on Korina Sanchez remarks, former Makati Representative Teodoro “Teddy” Locsin Jr., i@teddyboylocsin, who is also a noted TV commentator-editorial writer tweeted: “Good news. Korina said Anderson Cooper does not know what he is talking about. She just guaranteed he will stay for one month.”
In another tweet, Locsin said, “Thank you Anderson Cooper for existing. Without you we would be in dreamland.”
