    Default 80 core monster [pics]

in relation to the previously posted thread on Intel's 80 core behemoth, here are some updates:

Gitex 2008: Can't run Windows today

We managed to get some additional details and pictures of this 80 core CPU beast. We had a chance to see and picture the wafer and you can clearly see that this CPU is going to be huge, but since its now developed in 65nm there will be a lot of chance to some serious shrinkage.

If you take in the account that the 80 core CPU should come in five to seven years this would probably be the time of 10nm or even smaller transistors as 32nm is due in late 2009 or early 2010 and two years after is the time for 22nm, so in 2012.

As you can see the CPU is quite huge but we also learned that at this stage this CPU cannot run Windows, but it shows some basic functionalities and a smart CPU management where it can turn of cores it doesn’t need and save some power and battery life.

I think this is designed for supercomputers, not desktop personal computers.

basically, it is STILL a prototype, and much more can be improved and most probably, yeah, for servers and supercomputers. imagine going quad socket. >

Just like the computers at Sony Imageworks. I mean, supercomputers.

Nothing new, 80 physical cores but with an unknown performance level.. eve intel is smart enough not to break down core i7 into 100 cores via hyperthreading ^_^
