PS3 can be jailbreaked even without USB dongles. Just use ordinary flash drives to copy the files.

1. Download OFW 3.55 and KMEAW CFW 3.55
2. System Update to OFW 3.55
3. System Update to KMEAW CFW 3.55

Yes, there is a risk and it's up to you if you want to jb your unit. I just posted that it is now possible and I have done it on my own unit.

I have read that the PS3's root keys was compromised and Sony can't fix it by just updating the firmware. They need to change the hardware.
