Unhappy Performance Appraisal / Salary Increase

I have searched the web for topics which involves performance appraisal and salary increase practices in the Philippines but failed to find one. I find it difficult for a normal employee like me which is career/goal oriented, gives emphasis to job priorities and has an excellent communication skills not to ask for an equal unmitigated compensation. I believe I have proven my worth in the company and at times like these, I am likely to be motivated by holiday bonuses. I want job security, stability and fair compensation. Problem is how do I ask these things?

I just want to know something or anything about Performance Appraisals? Salary Increase? How do you ask for it? When is the right time? Is it legal? Am I just dreaming? Do I need to lose the job and pack up? I need opinions that will enlighten me and will dazzle my intrinsic need as an employee.

sa call centers (sa amo), quarterly man ang appraisal sa scorecards. if passing if ave ka ug 3, naay equivalent, if 4 naa, and samot na ang 5. magkataas imo appraisal, magkataas imo chance para mapromote. and if 1 yr na ka, naay jud nay definite nga increase.

The methods in getting a raise all over the world is somewhat similar. It's the company culture and the race's culture that's different. In our country's case, for most but definitely not all, it's not about what you did or what you can do. It's all about who you know. This is the hardest and worst case in terms of culture difference and the only way up is to kiss smelly and hairy asses.

You also have to consider seniority. If you can do a job better than a lot of your peers however there are people who have been in the company longer than you, there might be a chance that the company's culture might give SENIORITY a higher weight compared to actual performance and ability. In this case, you will have to wait for everyone who came before you to get promoted and then your turn will come. It may take time, but at least it will come unlike the first scenario.

Another way to get a salary increase would be to LEVEL UP yourself. hehe... You can do this buy getting certificates, attending seminars, etc.. that's related to your field of work of course. If you can get one, then you will definitely have a strong bargaining point. "I have this and he doesn't have it so why is he getting more than I am?" --- unless of course seniority comes before certificates which would not be very logical but still possible.

The timing is the hardest thing. Specially in these challenging economic times, I doubt it is the best time to ask for a raise. I'd rather LEVEL UP myself and when the dust settles, I'll give it a try.

Hope nakahatag ko inputs. And I'm hoping I can do what I just said here which is to LEVEL UP! lolz! so much easier said than done. hehe

I have to agree with MeMing..
it depends on the culture of the company.
in our case, it doesn't matter how talented u are or even the seniority is not in effect.
what matters is brown-nosing to your bosses and making them feel good.
that's the sad fact in most of the companies here

i think LEVELING UP is not the main problem but the actual bargaining is. when, how, what to say exactly?

yes it's been part of our culture to passively wait for increases. swerte-swerte lang. kung naka timing ka og boss nga maikog or maghunahuna sa employado, well then good. you have hope. pero kung maka timing og tihik og mamintahuso nga employer, ambot nalang. you really have to get out of that "ay maikog or maulaw ko" mentality and just go right there talk about your accomplishments and what you think you deserve (a raise). this is especially true in small companies where you have direct access to the boss/owner.

actually, I do not want the increase to be given to me out of leeching, pity or seniority. It may sound selfish but sometimes you need the right motivations to keep up and get pumped up at work and one of 'em is the promotion or at least salary increase man lang. Part of my philosophy in life is that I would rather be acknowledged for the things that I have accomplished, but I think the Filipino culture dictates this kind of philisophy as an ironic agony.

Culture or trait na ba jud na nato nga mo kiss @$$ just to get a promotion? when in fact, na pwede man ta mo file og performance appraisal and be recognized as an asset and not as a pain in the @$$. It's already there, we just don't use it.

Although I am planning to, but like what MeMing said it is easier said than done. lol

^ah, you're the type of employee who thrives on acknowledgment. nothing bad there. go get it if the company is not pro-active enough.

i once worked in a business-driven, politics-charged environment and i learned this one great lesson: sometimes you just have to be your own PR person. if you don't take credit for your accomplishments, someone else will. in the rat race, you might be as friendly and good-hearted as Remy (in Ratatouille), but still, your fellows are r-a-t-s hahaha.

bottomline is that it's okay to want a promotion/raise especially if you have accomplishments to back it up. it's good to be pro-active and assertive.

    good luck!
