We all want bright displays but Im just curious if a very high setting of brightness / contrast will hurt the overall lifespan of an LCd monitor? or is it just a myth? thoughts please... thanks!

You heard a myth already? if so, what does it says?
I never heard about that, and I am pretty sure its not true, LCD's are more durable than CRT's yet its more fragile.
LCD wont hurt when you change the contrast and brightness however it would definitely consume a high electricity. But mostly LCD's are in default setting so no need for you to set anyway, and I prefer to set to default.
Dili man siguro ni tinuod. Kay Some laptops offer those Glossy/Crystal bright LCD to offer much more brightness instead of the old ones (Dili na ka kailangan ug suga). Mas naa pud ni glare and suwaw siya tan-awon. This type of LCD mas dako nuon kuha ug kuryente.
there are alot of PIII laptops still nowadays that used to be very bright since its birth...
way to go bro! Below is an excerpt I got when I google it:
"When the liquid crystal is a solid, its molecules are lined up parallel to one another. In the intermediate cloudy phase (liquid), the molecules still retain this more or less parallel orientation. As in any liquid, the molecules are free to move around, but they tend to "line up" in one direction, reflecting light and causing a cloudy appearance. Higher temperatures tend to agitate the molecules and thus make the liquid clear."
So its okay to agitate the molecules of the liquid crystals to provide higher contrast ( My own opinion)
@COMCAM
wrong man cguro imong last statement:So its okay to agitate the molecules of the liquid crystals to provide higher contrast ( My own opinion)
kay it says sa imong research nga:
Higher temperatures tend to agitate the molecules and thus make the liquid clear.
so kung clear ang liquid, wala nay makit-an... clear gud.. dili man LCD ang clear, ang liquid man..
maybe you would also like to make your own lcd chech this video: Home-made LCD - Video
What the the the what? nice video by the way... mind boggling.. this uses food coloring.. 5 stars for screwing with people's minds..

IMO, it shortens the LCD's backlight lifespan so mao na nga maguba pero ang LCD k ra. ang backlight lang ang dili mo siga.![]()
