I use a 50mm 1.8 in at least 80% of my shoots. it's sharp! the quality of most prime lenses are better. plus of course being able to shoot in low light situations has its advantages.

Yes I have a prime lens pod. 50 f1.8. I used it for product photography and tight portraits. Mas clearer man gud sya.Nya ganahan ko kay mas maklaro ang depth of field nya. I agree with pnoize2k7 about shooting with low light. The reason for this I suppose is single optical glass lang gamit gud so dli na kaayo kuti in mechanism. Unya direct na gyud sa iyang sensor when taking an image

lahi ra gud sa uban lenses na mo-agi pa ug series glass then into a the sensor. Pero for special occasion lang nako gamiton ni prime lens nako.. Correct me if I am wrong pero naay certain focus range ang mga prime lens.

prime lenses are for crisp and clear shots...

alucard_x is right about product photography & tight portraits.

the only problem you'll have to face with this kind of lens is that you have to move back and forth to get your exact frame, otherwise you'll have to edit it in photoshop or any software.

Not quite a master but here goes...

The 50mm is a good lens for portrait for cameras that have a 1.5 crop factor. The reason being, if converted, that translates to 75mm on a full frame sensor; which is pretty good for portrait (ideal is 85-105).

But 50mm's arent really that special in terms of image quality and bokeh. Its really just the focal length that makes it seem like it's "THE" lens to have. In reality, when you bought a film camera back in the day, you got a 50mm as part of the bundle...and today, they are fairly cheap.

    BTW, I have a 50mm 1.4 and i love it...

Try looking for the Nikon 28mm 1.4. Now THATS a prime lens.

a must have lens is a prime one (wide primes, standard, mid-tele, tele)

    - 28 (wide enough)
    - 50 (close to the 85 portrait)
    - 128 (mid-tele)
    - 300 (ultimate tele prime)

my 50mm f1.4 stays with my camera almost 65% of the time
    - small compact light
    - very sharp
    - image quality
    - color
    - fast af
    - hunts low light
    - bokeh
