Thread: Program Pricing

    Default Program Pricing

Hi Istoryans. I was wondering how would you calculate the price for making and selling you software?

Unsa may basihan nato ana? Softwares that would contain a GUI to work around a database. Inventory for example.

As far as Im concerned, I am basing it on sa company or tawo nga gapahimo nimo. Ang-ang mangayu kag dako kaayu unya starting pa lang sila or unsa. Usa sad, pero wa jud koy klaro ani, ang kahago sa ga program. Unsaon mana pag kwenta ang kahago? Hahaha.

    I. Labor
    - Kung gatrabaho ka as a programmer pila man imo sweldo per hour? Multiply that to the number of hours you'll be working on the project. If daghan mo gatrabaho ana then the same calculation applies for each resource / programmer.

    II. Materials
    - Depende sa imo platform / environment. If open-source imo environment (e.g. 3rd-party libraries) then usually you won't spend anything. If proprietary imo environment (e.g. MS products) then i-apil ug compute ang imo magasto sa uban software.

    III. Overheard
    - Apila kwenta imo kuryente, transpo (e.g. meeting with clients or team), food, etc...

Sum everything up. You now have the total cost for your software.

Mark-up at least 30% as profit, add it to the total cost, then you have your price.

    However....

If you plan to resell your software - meaning you will not give your source code to your client, you will keep your source code and reproduce it for other clients - then pag-mark-down sa imo total price per software. Pila imo i-mark-down? Depende na sa imo software.

    Hope this helps.

If you are just a freelancer, runninng busines on your own and youu have the time in the world, freedom to go out, and freedom to do whatever in your spare time.
You have the freedom to present your software anytime while your client is not so strict.... the price should be reasonable.

If you have a company or in a group, there must be policy within your group and more focused on spent time, electricity, transportation, labor.....etc
The price should could be high and meet the deadlines.

On the other hand, If your program is so easy to implement or easier done by other programmers.... don't do overpricing. You can't attract many clients with that. Consider the difficulty of the project, and not how the program was made.

Imagine if you are buying a software to a programmer, do you mind buying a customized software for your business even the price is high or can't meet the deadline?
There many things to think about......... at least make a win-win situation as possible.

Attract as many clients as possible while you can still do it.

time na sa pinas pa me, I bought a around 3K shopping cart website and sold out for 15K each for 5 different customers, 3 of them are from college thesis. Funny thing is, their panel (during defense) didnt check the backbone/structure of database and its coding. though I changed a lot on the frontend, products, layouts, additional features such as user accounts, delivery reports etc... but the concept and methodology is the same.

another advantage in my side, is I know assembly, C++, those freelancers who have projects such as MCU/PIC devices came to me to code for them, When they have some projects I got as well...I keep in touch a lot of those VB developers, coz I know there are times, and really a lot of times asking me to develop VB programs. I hate reading VB codes hate reading VB books, so I just bought it from them, ask them for help how to do this and properly do that... and gain 70% more on the original price.

pricing is not really difficult, as long as you wont let yourself underpaid. I hate flat rate, I experience finishing the project and gaining only at around P75 per hours.
That's why I keep telling my customer that you will get monkeys if you pay peanuts

a freelancer must be resourceful enough, be kind and cooperative to fellow freelancers, talk to them, share with them, don't be greedy. Lowering your cost just to get the project. Hell No... one day you'll get some huge project, then you can assure someone is might ready to help you out.

I let them pay me in 3 different ways:
    1. Fixed monthly payment until the product is finish
    2. Payment set by me, fully paid in advance
    3. 50/50 of every product sold by that client (I work together with the client to develop the program)

I made most money with 3). In fact, I still receive money from projects I did a long long time ago.
