I think a good Martial Arts should not depend on only strength, so i would have to say technique since at one point you will get older and still be able to use technique, but your strength will not be the same as when you where young....

I know many of the older guys with styles like Bujinkan (Ninjutsu) and the Villasin style can still keep up with us young guys, but if you look to styles like Kick/Thai-boxing there is often a limit to how long they can keep doing it as effective as when they where young....

    My point exactly.....

I can also mention, that when i was back in Denmark i did try sparring (Standing and ground) against big guys (100+ Kg. muscle), but i was able to win by using technique.....

I also think it should be said that there is a difference in Sports Martial Arts here and Streetwise Martial Arts, since many Sports Martial Arts do depend on your strength........
But a real streetwise Martial Arts would not depend on your strength, but on technique....

I guess thats one of the big differences between having rules, weight classes and fighting fair compare to fighting dirty all the time.....

dont forget about speed my friends, if u have the technique but ur executing it very slow, u still cant pull up ur technique effectively. speed + technique = power overwhelming hehe.

    Sure Speed is important to....
But if you take all 3 of them: speed, power and technique and ask the question: "what is most important?"
Then i would still say technique, since both speed and power is a thing you will loss with age, besides there are some techniques that does not demand that much speed or power to work effectively against a opponent if you look at the techniques from a more streetwise martial arts, compare to those from not so streetwise martial arts or a martial sports....

agree. if we look at martial arts as a purely physical activity, then power = mass * speed. so, the bigger you are and the faster you strike then the more effective you would be. but, without the right techniques you might be wasting your energy doing things that would not work well, or worse, the opponent could exploit to throw you off.

self-defense needs the right attitude (mental state) to decide what to do (appropriate technique) and the body to do it well -- under stressful situations.

i remember a story of a sports writer who enrolled in karate and after some sessions he had learned to properly execute punches and some kicks. he was eager to use his new skills in real situation. but when he was surprised by someone who tried to snatch his necklace, he reflexively hit the snatcher with his umbrella.

I agree its very much about the mind also and learning how to "improvise" and "adapt" to a attack, since no attack are the same and it can never be predicted, what happen during a fight.....
I also think good styles gives the student good habits like body movement, that can deal with surprise attacks like the very common "sucker punch".......
The same way its good the other way around by using "dirty tricks", "deception" and "hidden your technique". Since we dont have to use as much speed or power then, but also if the opponent by any chance had a weapon you dont want him to know your are up to something before its to late and he is laying in the dirt....
