Boxer Karlo Maquinto loses battle for life

Boxer Karlo Maquinto, who has been comatose after a boxing match last weekend, died Friday at 10:17 a.m., sportscaster Chino Trinidad said.

The 21-year-old boxer collapsed and lost consciousness after his bout with Mark Joseph Costa in Caloocan City last Saturday night. The bout had ended in a draw.

Maquinto was then confined at the Far Eastern University Hospital in Quezon City.

In his Facebook account, Trinidad thanked all those who prayed for Maquinto and asked for prayers for his family and close friends.

Sad day for boxing. I don't think though that that would lead to boxing being banned. It's a contact sport and these things are expected to happen. My sympathies to the family of this boxer.

banning boxing is close to impossible because of it's fanbase. If you ban boxing, then people will find another way to hold boxing matches. mudaghan na nuon ang underground boxing (murag fight club), and consequently lesser regulations, lesser safety precautions, more fatalities and higher accident incidence. So banning boxing will only make things worse. Mas maayo nang naay regulatory organizations para ma bantayan ang conduct sa boxing.
