When plants grow,
they form carbohydrates out of CO2 and water, using light as the energy source. This process is called photosynthesis.
CO2 is an abbreviation for Carbon Dioxide, which is a molecule containing one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen. The air we breath contains a small amount of CO2 gas.
Although they are called "aquatic plants", most aquarium plants are swamp or bog plants that grow up out of the water, where their leaves can continuously absorb CO2-gas from the air above the water, when the plants are exposed to light.
In an aquarium, placed entirely under water, plants are able to absorb only the CO2 that is dissolved in the water. In a heavily planted aquarium CO2 is in great demand and if not added regularly will become the main factor that limits plant growth. Adding more CO2 to aquarium water will usually greatly increase the plant growth.
