SMF is free, while vbulletin is not. Speaking of modules, there are a lot for both, but in terms of quality of service and better module programming vBulletin is better.

I'm not saying that SMF modules are not that good, all I'm saying is, over-all all vBulletin is better.

I don't know what you guys mean by module programming ... but I wouldn't say vBulletin's code is better. The difference is one is free and one it isn't and if you are selling something, they have to work. You can't expect the same quality, polish and support from free software although they definitely could be better.

smf is very different with vbulletin - smf is free specially when you purchase a domain and hosting with fantastico - most of there module has an error -

Don't use Fantastico Scripts, just download and install the latest release of SMF.

Sometimes using the scripts provided by Fantastico is outdated.

yeah it was outdated but smf is only good a small forum because when the times we get tons of members we have to use vbulletin because its friendly user and easy to install with.
