A family of six ended up in the hospital with bruises and other injuries they said were the result of a brutal exorcism at the hands of fellow cult members in Lapu-Lapu City.
The family sought the help of Maribago barangay captain Joseph Pangatuan, who is looking into complaints against the religious group, whose members have a devotion to the Seņor Sto. Nino.
Ronald Traya, 30, told the barangay captain that he, together with his mother Lymlym, 54; and four siblings aged 17 to 25 were kept for three days in the cult’s compound since Sunday.
He said they were told that demons had entered them and that the family needed to be exorcised. He said the family was only allowed to go home on Tuesday.
With police escorts, the barangay captain fetched the Trayas from home about 10 p.m. on Tuesday and brought them to the Mactan Community Hospital for treatment.
Ronald’s mother Lymlym had a bruise under her left eye and chest and cuts in the neck. A sister, Stephanie, who had bruises in different parts of her body, wasn’t strong enough to stand or walk.
The barangay captain said that when he got to the Traya's home, he was shocked by the family's condition. Read more here.
