Thread: WiFi Detector

    Default WiFi Detector

anybody out there who have software or knowledge on any wifi software detector that can detect all the access point nearest from your location, for you to be able to select which access point giving you a good signal before connecting to the net.

same with toshiba notebook/laptop it has built-in software already exclusively for toshiba. I just forgot what's the name of that software, I have that copy before but when I tried to install it, sad to say it doesn't work with the other brand.

    any ideas you can share?

i believe the wireless site survey utility is proprietary to the hardware.Â* Like the wireless PCI and PCMCIA cards of Linksys, Cisco, 3Com, etc., they came with their own monitoring (signal strength meter, data rate, noise level, available AP in the location, etc.) software.Â* Same is true with the one built in to laptops.

Haven't heard of a third party utility, though there are those softwares that can be used to sniff wireless LANs in the area, but these are commonly hacking tools. Like airsnort for example.

basically, there was also "net stumbler" where you can use this tool for monitoring the wireless signal from your access point but the thing is im looking a software like in toshiba they have "config free-connectivity doctor" its a very good software where you can see all the accesspoint available.

anyway, this is only for my own interest and if I can find this later im planning to install this to our business center where I have also wireless internet, printer, keyboard & mouse there.

    tnx tamblot

I know some hardware aside from the built in cards in the laptop that would detect if there are some other access point in your area so you can choose to connect.I believe without the hardware your software is useless because software alone cannot detect wireless connection without your WIFI hardware or external network cards.Im using USB wireless G Lynksys for my desktop, small as a pocket size to connect to any available wireless network available in my area and Windows XP PRO has a wireless network settings so im not using any other software to detect any available connections in my area.

Yup you're right ZIRA..but the statement above assuming that you have all the hardware for the wireless either built-in from your laptop, pcmcia card, PCI WLan card or USB wireless stick. The software that im talking about was like a "Connectivity Doctor" software, its a bundled or installed already when you buy new Toshiba Laptop. Thru this you can see all the access point installed in your building/company and you can select which access point nearest in your location for you to connect and get excellent quality signal. I'm looking any software with the same function of connectivity doctor that can work with any brand of laptop or desktop that has wireless.
