I have a new ps3 not for gaming but for the dvds and blu ray movies, so can i put movie files in the ps3 hard drive? can i buy an external hard disk and connect it via the ps3 USB and play supported blu ray movies?

Please note that the external device must be FAT32 formatted, which means, the size of the movie file can not exceed 4GB!
To play BD rips, you should just stream them from your PC, using a media server like tversity (free) or WMP11.
