Murag pwede but there's this note from my budget ECS KN1 Extreme motherboard (for my ath64 3200+ venice) Â*manual:
"However, using 20-pin power cable may cause the system to become unbootable or unstable because of insufficient electricity."
I know its different system but might be of help.

yupz! totally true i have tried this my self, tried it at a generic 300watts PSU and used it on a "915GAV" Intel board.. note* w/o the adapter..
it is hooked up with a DVD-RW, 1 Sata, 1 Pata, and 5 Chasis Fans..
hasn't Rebooted since... has been performing smoothly ever since...

It'll run, but the longer you use it or shall I say as the internal components of the of the 20pin PSU get used up, its bound to get unstable especially if you O.C. and you may be sacrificing your PC components, thats why if you inquire from 24pin mobo manufacturers they wont recommend using a 20 pin on a 24 pin board even with an adapter. Still, its really up to you Ive tried it and it worked for me too but had problems pag O.C. nako hence, I had to change to 24 pin to narrow down my troubleshooting steps.

interesting na da. but experience nako with psu, is that I had a generic psu dala sa casing, although 350 watts, akong athlon 1600+ oc to 2000+PC with KT333 board, 3 ka 80gb HD, usa ka dvdwriter, AGP, 2 soundcards, firewire card ug lan card, USB wireless mouse & keyboard. after 2 yrs na walay blema gi patay akong 2 ka 80gb hd, duda nako ni spike ang power supply. Lost all data for 3 album recordings total of 120 gig on both drives. cge na lang to ang installers, videos ug released music but kad2ng 3 ka albums, irreplaceable. May gani kay na retrieve namo ang data from one drive, napadagan by switching circuit board niya.
so if nag upgrade ka, change ka ug mobo proc, vidcard, unsaon man nimo ang da-an kundi i baligya or gamit as a backup pc, ul still nid a power supply para ana, so why not get a gud compatible psu? ako after ad2ng crash, palit dayon ko ug HEC na mahal pa sa akong processor. Okay ra lagi mo dagan,ug gaming ra na way blema if you lose data, but kung important ongoing work is on disk, do not take the risk. that is why importante sab external drive para safety sad.
