Paramount Television is planning on reviving the classic 1999 space odyssey parody GALAXY QUEST with a new television series. Robert Gordon, the film’s original writer, is expected to pen the new series, as well as joining the executive producing team of GALAXY QUEST alums Dean Parisot and Mark Johnson, the director and producer of the original film, respectively. Notably Johnson sits as an executive producer on both BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL, so we know for sure that this is a guy who can get stuff done.
This move would be in line with others made by Paramount, mining their back catalog for television projects, with films seeing series movement including SHUTTER ISLAND, SCHOOL OF ROCK, SHOOTER, and MINORITY REPORT.
GALAXY QUEST is, to use an overworn phrase, one of those cult classic films that never quite goes away. The reason for that is, of course, that’s it’s still pretty great. It never gets old in the same way that STAR TREK proper never gets old, and fans of sci-fi love it too: At a recent STAR TREK convention, con-goers ranked GALAXY QUEST as among the best STAR TREK films of all time, despite it not actually being a STAR TREK film. The flick had the best looking ship designs this side of JJ Abrams, and in terms of cast, you got to see Alan Rickman, Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, teeny bopper Justin Long and a pre-almost-everything-you-know-him-from Sam Rockwell in unforgettable roles.
