Also known as
SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden
This is just one of the films released that shows how the original mission codename Operation Neptune Spear had been carried out. Geronimo is the code word for the capture or death of Bin Laden.
The plot has some similarity to the book "
No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama bin Laden" by Mark Owen/Matt Bissonnette who was a former Navy Seal DEVGRU and part of the team who carried out the mission. Though the film is not as detailed as the book, it shows how CIA located the HVT (High Value Target), plan out and carried out the mission together with SEAL Team Six.
The actual raid involved SEAL operators from the Red Squadron of the Joint Special Operations Command’s US Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) aboard two modified Black Hawk helicopters. A total of 79 operators and an assault dog carried out the mission. News reported that the dog which is a Belgian Malinois was tasked to track those who would attempt to escape, alert operators of approaching pakistani security forces and to assist in locating hidden rooms and door in the compound. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) otherwise known as the “Night Stalkers“ airlifted the operators from the staging area at Jalalabad in Eastern Afghanistan. It is said that the Black Hawks deployed in this mission are the "stealth" version that are harder to detect on Radar and fly more quietly. Chinook heavy-lift helicopters were also employed as backups. They were on standby just miles away from the compound carrying a QRF (Quick Reaction Force) of around 24 DEVGRU operators and Army Rangers. Their objective is to interdict any attempts of Pakistani military to interfere with the raid. Other Chinooks, holding 25 more operators, were stationed just across the border in Afghanistan for additional reinforcements. The 160th SOAR helos were supported by fixed-wing fighter jets and drones. The Air Force had a full team of combat SAR helos in standby. The flight time is 90 minutes to get the raiding team from Jalalabad, Afghanistan to the compound at Abbottabad, Pakistan. Infil to exfil of operators took 38 minutes.
