MANILA, Philippines – The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) warned the public yesterday to beware of fake eye doctors who have set up practice in various parts of the country, particularly in the provinces.

“There are so many optical shops like in the malls, but only very few of them have licensed optometrists,” PRC board of optometry member Dr. Vivian Sarabia said in an interview.

She reminded the public to be careful when using contact lenses and eyeglasses, which are medical devices that need to be prescribed by eye specialists.

She said improper use of contact lenses could lead to infections and disorders that could cause blindness. “They have to consult a licensed optometrist because not all eyes are fit to use contact lenses,” Sarabia said.

As for reading glasses sold in stores, Sarabia said they should be used only in emergencies and disposed of afterwards. “If one is using incorrect grade of reading glasses it could eventually lead to cataract or glaucoma,” she said.

Sarabia admitted that the country is experiencing a shortage of optometrists since the government opted to add two more years to the previous four-year optometry course, but said the PRC is trying to encourage more high school graduates to take up optometry.
