Default Power Supply Reference: Consumption, Savings, And More...

Very informative indeed... learned new things today... especially the one in page 4...

Frequently powering a system on and off does cause deterioration and damage to the components. This seems logical, but the simple reason is not obvious to most people. Many believe that flipping system power on and off frequently is harmful because it electrically “shocks” the system. The real problem, however, is temperature or thermal shock. As the system warms up, the components expand; as it cools off, the components contract. In addition, various materials in the system have different thermal expansion coefficients, so they expand and contract at different rates. Over time, thermal shock causes deterioration in many areas of a system.

From a pure system-reliability viewpoint, you should insulate the system from thermal shock as much as possible. When a system is turned on, the components go from ambient (room) temperature to as high as 185°F (85°C) within 30 minutes or less. When you turn off the system, the same thing happens in reverse, and the components cool back to ambient temperature in a short period.

Thermal expansion and contraction remains the single largest cause of component failure.

to the extreme level, YES. from what I understood.. the lesser times you turn your PC on and off the longer the life of the component will be..

pwd pa explain ku ani.. hehhee noob kaau.. i've always had the impression that electronics are "consumables", meaning the the longer you've used them, the more they come close to the point of breaking. Which is opposite gamay sa 1st post and explanation..hehehehe

ahhmm, naa actually and detailed explanation pero in lay-man's term, dili maayo ang kanunay on-off labi na kung short intervals lang... depende kung asay mas practical para sa imo, murag case to case basis iyang point... kay syempre, kung kanunay on, mo saka jud imo power consumption (didto na pud mo sulod ang power saving modes, e.g. sleep, etc...). pero again, depende sa practicality and it may not really apply to others while mo apply sa uban...

also, kung kanunay on, naa pud dha ang fire hazzard (rare but it happens sometimes... )

so depende ra jud sa scenerio... but technically speaking, i get and agree to the author's points... and engineers out there, you should understand this better labi na mga ECE's and EE's...
