The best resolution is to use the monitors native resolution.
Difference between those refresh rates is the number of times an image is refreshed per second. I believe 120Hz and 240Hz are done with some sort of interpolation, not even TN's are fast enough to refresh with a real 120Hz.
Higher refresh rates needs a powerful system to keep up with it.. 120Hz needs 120fps minimum to "feel smoother" and thats all there is to it.

ok thanks, any other inputs?
how about those using their current settings? hows the display performace?
A monitor only has a single native resolution if its 1080p then its 1080p, if you use any other resolution then it would look washed out.
The higher the native resolution of the monitor the better your images will be, doesnt take rocket science for that.
It sounds like you dont even know or understand what your asking for..
To add, 1080p is the highest that you can easily get. next is 2560x1600, if budget permits 2560x1600 is the absolute minimum for me with gaming.

best resolution to use is the native resolution for your LCD. for refresh rates, LCD are using 60Hz max(some 75Hz) anything higher than than will be useless coz the output will still be converted to 60Hz(or 75Hz on some) onscreen...
see this link for some discussions about lcd refresh rates:
