Fans have bearings. They are essential in making the fans spin. Fans actually spin using magnets.
The different bearing determine the performance of the fans. ang kasagaran is sleeve bearing kay barato man ni siya inig manufacture. these are quiet but usually have the shortest lifespan. around 2 yrs or so...

when the bearing start to fail, the fans themselves won't last long. patanawa lang jud na kay basin the fans (hopefully) can be replaced (if it is the fans that are malfunctioning).

i suggest pa repair na siya especially if u keep using the laptop. without fans, grabi mo init ang laptop. heat is the no1 enemy sa electronics. the hotter they are the more performance u lose. if there is enough heat, it can permanently damage ur components.

if there is enough heat, yes it can shut down ur laptop. good news is fans arent that expensive to replace though (again, if ang fans ra ang problema then ok ra). but i'm not very familiar with laptop fans on how replaceable they are. i usually work with desktops =P
