Lobster roaches are an excellent feeder species.
The Lobster Feeder Cockroach is commonly kept in the U.S. as a food source for arachnids and lizards due to their ease of rearing and palatability.
The body of this roach is soft enough for almost all predators, there is a high meat to shell ratio, they do not seem to be able to hide as well as many other roaches, and finally, they do not have the impressive defensive smell of many roaches.
A natural tendency is to hide under surface objects without digging deeply, making them accessible to their predator. If any escape, they do not survive indoors, nor reproduce.
The smaller size and softer bodies of the lobsters make these ideally suited for chameleons, monitors, bearded dragons, and invertebrates such as tarantulas and spiders in general. They are considered more nutritious than crickets due to less exoskeleton "chitin" than crickets or even mealworms. They also don't jump like crickets.
With a maximum size of approximately 1 1/4", they are only slightly larger than adult crickets and can be used equally well as feeders. The advantages are they live many times longer, and do not create the smell as crickets do.
Food and moisture is provided mainly with fresh fruits and greens, they like apple and orange slices. Do not let them go for more than a couple of days without adding some fruit as this adds moisture. Can also add a little bread or cat/dog food for protein.
They are smaller as adults than the hissers, only reaching about 1 1/4" total length. They are also much softer bodied than the other roaches making them more digestible and easier to eat. The fact that the adults are still small enough to be feeders is an added plus in my collection.
