Duterte ally call for end of drug-related slays

A Cabinet secretary has called for an end to killings related to President Rodrigo Duterte's bloody war on drugs, saying killing drug suspects and peddlers is not the solution.

"We do not tolerate extrajudicial killings and we are all for due process, and we must strengthen our voice when it comes to promoting humane and compassionate means to end or mitigate the drug problem," Social Welfare and Development Secretary Judy Taguiwalo said Thursday.

She said the drug problem can be addressed without using violence.

"Our country's drug problem has to be addressed through interventions by targeting the root causes: poverty caused by lack of social support for many Filipinos, corruption in various levels in the various agencies of government, and lack of sustainable, productive employment for the poor," she added.

Taguiwalo was the guest of honor in a gathering of women from different faiths who stand united in the belief that life is valuable and sacred.

Over 1,000 drug suspects have been killed after supposedly fighting it out with cops during operations. The ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group has recorded a total 1,947 deaths for the period of May 10 to October 6.
