i don't recommend pennies anymore. actually a few weeks later i changed them to thermal pads, much better heat conduction. at least 15-20 degrees cooler than the pennies. thermal pads - Google Search

    Nice share @coolnezz.

I would think i have made the same mistake of keeping the notebook running for ends on end.
The notebook just stopped working one day.
I changed the fan motor assembly instead and applied new thermal paste.
Looking back, i could have just tried what you did.

im just curios why would some one run a laptop nonstop for 5 days... even for torrent downloading it is atleast well ventilated and cooled.... a very bad habit... and could wear your laptop down fast...
i for one run my laptop almost 30 days without putting is off.
I simply was lazy to put it off or just forgot it.
It was a costly mistake as i have to change the fan motor unit.
Today i still sometimes forget to close y notebook for days on end. Perhaps too confident of me having a spare fan motor unit at hand.
I know its a bad habit. Its just hard to break.

    Thumbs up Reflow Reloaded 2015!

    Reflow Reloaded 2015! Lol.

So the original fix lasted 2 years and 10 months. Not bad!
Well for the last two weeks, my laptop's video was becoming unstable.
After a few minutes of being on, the display would start to flicker and turn blank or stripes would appear.
At first it was intermittent, then a few days ago it had become a regular occurrence.
So a couple days ago, I finally decided to take it apart and do a another reflow on the GPU.
This time I used a "No Clean Flux" solder gel and a better thermal interface material.
The cooling fan was also becoming very noisy so to quiet it down I sprayed the bearings with silicone lubricant.

I had used Arctic Silver paste in the original reflow.

    Reflowing the GPU

Noctua, way better than Arctic Silver IMO. Used this in my desktop/gaming GPU as well.

    No clean flux.

Lubricant for the cooling fan ball bearings. Fan is significantly quieter than before!

    Much cooler temps!

    Boot up after reflow.

So hopefully, with the use of flux and better thermal paste, it would last another 3-4 years or longer!
