It all depends on what type of fight you are able to muster. China has been extremely vague about the specifics of their territorial claims in the region making many countries highly suspicious of their intentions. I strongly suspect that they will attempt to annex huge areas in the coming years. We should be investing in modern defense systems to deter aggression. We do not need an offensive capability, but should not make the mistake of presenting ourselves as easy prey.

It's a matter of principle, TS. You know the saying give them an a hand and they'll take your arm. This also applies to defending our territory. You cede Scarborough to them and we might end up ceding Palawan or worse, the entire country.

Also, if we discover oil or natural gas there then it makes it even more important that we hold on to that area. It's both a matter of principle and economics.

If ASEAN isn't alarmed by this standoff then the leaders of ASEAN are really pretty dumb. China is only going to get stronger as years pass by because military might closely follows economic might and there will come a point where even the U.S. will have a hard time deterring their military strength. So it's critical that ASEAN step up and begin regional security cooperation like NATO did against Soviet Russia.
