    no oil in the spratlys...
the real issue there is the strategic military base in the southeast by china...
there is no doubt that china is a fast growing military force...
in fact, in 1939 during World War II, japan occupied and used the islands as a submarine base for the occupation of Southeast Asia...
it's like chess, the one who holds and control the center has the edge in winning the game...

China boosts marine surveillance over island tensions.

China Marine Surveillance's Sun Shuxian said 1,000 new personnel would be added as well as new equipment.

Sea patrols would be carried out more frequently "to strengthen law enforcement in Chinese-related waters", the China Daily quoted him as saying.

^ Yeah, this story has been completely overshadowed by Bin Laden's death, but for us it's actually a serious sign of an escalation by China who will use these resources "to strengthen law enforcement in Chinese-related waters" not simply Chinese waters which in real terms means putting personnel into contested areas. This is expansionism through the backdoor.
