First off, look at it from a semantics perspective. "BASED ON" means that you don't have to take it as 100% factual. The words "adapted from" or "inspired by" are similar terms--they do not connote a literal or verbatim copy of real or factual events. Thus, if you have already prepared your mind that the film you're about to see that's "based on" a real life event is in fact, NOT 100% factual, then you won't feel that you're being "cheated" or "nailad" just because someone said (and that someone may know a lot about the ACTUAL event) that the story or plot is "not accurate" or "not similar to what really happened". You can still enjoy the movie for what it is...something "BASED ON" a real event.

    Furthermore, your examples:

    a) Blair Witch Project
    b) The Devil Inside
    c) etc.

...are NOT based on real life events--anything supernatural is mostly a work of FICTION, because wala'y factual evidence that supernatural events occur--we live in a world dictated by the laws of physics. So sa sugod pa lang daan, naay dakong diperensya ang imong topic, kay dapat kanang mga movies nga naa diha sa listahan dili naman na tuohan automatically--they are works of fiction--only a fool ang motuo nga "based on real life events" na nga mga stories.

As to Open Water, this kind of story is more of a 50-50 kind of story--it may be based on a COMPILATION of real events, and sewn together to create a still-fictitious story, but indeed based on some real life scenarios.

Real-life event stories are really ones that are based on FACTUAL HISTORICAL events. Good examples are war films, biographies/biopic (life stories of famous people) i.e. "Nixon", or event-unfolding i.e. story of "People Power/EDSA", "The Last King of Scotland" etc.

Mmmm actually there were some movies are actual based and some are from the authors or writers novel based. We can also relate that based of true events as well.
