Â*Makati is the heart of the Philippine economy.

    Tindi pag ito ang tinamaan.

Let’s center on the presidency on this one. PGMA was right when, in her remarks, she said that giving in to calls for her to resign because it would open the floodgates to Edsas 4, 5, 6 and so on. Indeed, forcing a president out of office a third time in twenty years establishes an even stronger precedent for people from Manila taking to the streets and upending the results of any election.

There were at least two flaws, though, in that reasoning, flaws that attach to the situation that PGMA finds herself in. The first flaw is that she herself was a beneficiary of an EDSA and thus has less credibility in claiming how damaging Edsas can be. Second, an Edsa cannot force a president out of office simply because of an unpopular decision — say, imposing a new tax. Edsas have forced presidents out of office when the presidents have been perceived as committing criminal acts -- Marcos for stealing the 1986 snap polls, Erap for dipping his fingers into jueteng money, and now GMA (if she falls) for manipulating the results of the 2004 elections.

Hence it is true that a future president could face an Edsa much more easily if GMA gives in now, BUT only if a future president faces a situation where the overwhelming public perception is that a crime has been committed and the president refuses to acknowledge it – or hides behind legal technicalities to escape accountability.

The final lesson: People power saps people power, especially if the people believe that while people power takes out crooks, it only gives birth to a new set of crooks.

Friday night, there were more people in Manila’s bars than at any of the pro or anti-GMA rallies. Not that GMA can take solace in the fact that millions have not rallied to ask her to quit; it just says, I think, that people have given up on her and on every politician and wish they would just vanish from the face of this earth!
