Growth in Bohol tourism not bad for Cebu - DOT

THE opening of more resort-hotels in Panglao Island, Bohol will boost Cebu’s tourism industry, according to Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Aurora Patria Roa.

This, as Flushing Meadows Resort and Playground, located on the coast of Dauis town in Panglao, plan to start operations with 35 rooms next month.

Marcie Abesamis, Flushing Meadows marketing and communications manager, said the resort is constructing 65 more rooms. By the end of the year, Flushing Meadows will have 100 rooms available, she added.

More resorts

In an interview, Roa said two more resorts located in Panglao are also under construction, and may open before the year ends.

Bohol Beach Club, a member of the Tambuli Resorts, has also added seven rooms.

“Bohol’s tourism industry is already starting to boom,” Roa told Sun.Star Cebu.

The rise of Bohol Province as a tourism destination has earlier created fears that tourists would forget about Cebu.
But Roa said this would never happen.

“There is no competition between Bohol and Cebu. Each is complementing the other. It has always been Cebu-Bohol. Bohol, like other provinces in the region, needs Cebu (which is) the gateway of the region. Cebu, on the other hand, needs Bohol to enhance itself as a tourist destination,” she said.

Benefit

Cebu Visitors and Conventions Bureau trustee Bernadette Jingco earlier said Cebu would benefit from the rise of Bohol’s tourism industry.

“It would also be Cebu’s success, as we have been helping Bohol develop its tourism sector,” she said.

Bohol is accessible by land, sea and air via Cebu. Direct flights from Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific fly six times a week to Cebu. Silkair also flies from Singapore directly to Cebu twice a week; Qatar Airlines, from Doha, three times a week.
