DOST secretary bats for use of Bataan nuke plant
(The Philippine Star) Updated March 16, 2011 10:01 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Amid growing fears of a possible nuclear catastrophe in Japan, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo said today that he is for the use of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).

"Nuclear power is a safe, economical source of power," Montejo said in a television interview.

Sus mao jud lage ni.. Daghan kaayog OA.. overreact dayon. Just because naay incident sa Japan, discredited na dayun ang Nuclear Power as if all of a sudden untouchable tech na siya.

What if all those power plants were instead large containment vessels for petrol to fuel petrol-based power plants? Don't you think they would explode in a fireball of cataclysm instantly killing everyone within a 5 mile radius?

Dili nalang ta mag OA og overreact.. Japan and the Philippines are different countries, and even Japan will not give up nuclear energy because of this incident. In China, which is quake prone, they are still building about 20 nuclear plants. It's stupid to stick to traditional plants with oil prices the way they are...

That nuclear plant could power the entire luzon... dang, this could make our electrical rates drop fast... WE NEED MORE POWER. To develop, we need more POWER SOURCES, and that nuclear plant is a very feasible idea.

Not so safe when you live in the ring of fire, an area prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunami. Imagine if Japan had lousy emergency services. There are serious risks associated with nuclear power plants and these risks are currently being realized.

The accident at Japan only proves how tough the newer generations of the nuclear reactors. It was able to withstand an 8.8 mag earthquake without having to blow itself up at once. Risks of nuclear meltdown? I'm not worried. These aren't nuclear reactors with a label "Made in China" in it.

The accident at Russia only proves how hard it is to remove human stupidity out of the equation.

The newer plants being built in China are far superior in technology to these old, antiquated plants. Please do your research before bashing "Made in China" because it shows your ignorance...

so you saying its an act of stupidity for Japan to build nuclear power plants cause they are located in an earthquake prone area? the fact is they build those even they have over 1000 quakes a year cause they know its a calculated risks and they can handle it.

I believe you failed to get the stereotype and the sarcasm noted when I said "Made in China".
