Default Miriam wants tax on unhealthy foods

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago recently filed a resolution seeking to tax junk foods to curb the prevalence of obesity in the country.

She said this would deter adults from over-consumption of “less healthy foods.”

“It is imperative for the government to address the alarming issue of obesity by devising programs which would instill health awareness among young Filipino adults and encourage them to actively engage in physical workout to prevent the onslaught of obesity,” Santiago said in Resolution 214.

Citing a study conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Santiago noted that as of 2008, 27 in 100 adults are overweight.

Santiago noted that 2.7 percent of adults in the Philippines aged 20 and above suffer from impaired fasting glucose, while 4.8 percent suffer from hyperglycemia or high fasting blood sugar.

Santiago said manufacturers and distributors are expected to oppose the proposal.

The senator suffers from hypothyroidism, a deficiency in the production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, causing metabolism to slow down, therefore resulting in weight gain.

Santiago yesterday fell on stage before addressing a forum in Istanbul, Turkey. After examination by doctors, she was declared to be in a stable condition.

Santiago was in Turkey to speak before the annual forum of Parliamentarians for Global Action where she urged countries to become parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

    patungan ug tax.

this resolution is a waste of taxpayers' money! Unsa man ni oi! The reason why there are so many people obese is because we eat too much and exercise too little, its as simple as that! Tanawa ang mga amerikano. Why are there so many fat yanks kung puro chicken breast na lang ang gikaon. Ang chicken skin ilang ilabay. Ang tambok sa baboy ilang itangtang. Yet, there are so many obese americans!

So that means rice is no good? My aunt was told she should minimize eating quaker oats kay mu grabe iya stomach hyperacidity. That makes quaker oats bad? Kato diay nag reklamo nga ang chicharon maka high blood? Kinsa diay ingon sa iya mukaon ug daghan nga chicharon?

All foods must be taken in moderation. All drinks outside of water should be taken in moderation. It is up to the dining public to order it or not. We dont need someone in congress to determine what is good or bad and set a tax on it. Mga amaw ra, grandstanding tawag ana. Kasayo pud nila mangampanya oi!

People don't like to walk because we don't have sidewalks. People don't like to use bicycles because maligsan ra ta sa karsada. We are a tropical country so kung maglakaw ang mga tao, naa pud shaded area. Implement huge penalties for buses, jeeps and taxis if they stop in no stopping/no parking zones. Pila ra diay mulakaw 100 meters to the official waiting shed/stand?
