CEBU, Philippines
(2nd UPDATE) - Fifteen people died while 57 others were injured after an overloaded bus crashed into a house in central Philippines on Saturday.
The bus, carrying between 60 to 70 people, crashed into a house in barangay Lutopan, Toledo City, Cebu province at around 5 p.m.
The Corominas bus with plate number GVG 145 came from Cebu City and was on its way to the town of Tuburan also in Cebu province.
Most of the passengers were workers on their way home.
Initial reports said the bus lost its brakes and crashed into the house.
The wall of the house was damaged, but no one from the house was injured.
The injured passengers were immediately brought to Toledo City District Hospital.
All those who died were passengers of the bus.
The bus driver surrendered to the police after the incident.
According to the driver, Diosdado Requiso, the bus lost its brakes while it was turning a blind curve. He said he couldn't control the bus and that its right side eventually crashed into a wall.
However, the injured passengers said the bus driver was already driving too fast right after it left Cebu City.
Police said the area where the incident happened was accident prone. A complaint of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide with physical injuries will be filed against the driver.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) conducted a check and found that the seating capacity of the bus was only 53, but it had between 60 to 70 passengers.
Since the bus was overloaded, the driver had a hard time controlling the bus as it turned a corner, initial reports from investigators said.
Authorities immediately suspended the franchise of the bus line, and all of its buses will be subjected to a road-worthiness test.
