I wouldn't put too much stock on "gene discoveries." Some geneticists often jump the gun, make announcements, and have a gene patented without doing all that much research. "Next" by Michael Chrichton is a good book to read about the problem. Anyway, talks about the "immortality gene" have been around for years, so unless there's some concrete evidence, there's not that much to be excited about. Just saying.

I read the article and my response to the question of "Why do We AGE?" is that finding & understanding the genetic factors that affect telomere length does not change the fact that telomeres get shorter every time a cell replicates which causes us to age at a cellular level..In the future,we may find ways to increase telomere length or repair telomeres but these does not altogether stop the shortening of telomeres..Therefore on a cellular level, you can say that telomere shortening is the answer to "Why do We AGE?"
