    Holcim allots P1b for Davao
    September 4, 2006

Holcim Philippines Inc., one of the biggest cement producers in the country, is investing P1 billion over the next 12 months to restore its facility in Davao to full operations by mid-2007.

“This P1-billion investment demonstrates our long-term commitment to the economic growth of Davao and the rest of Mindanao,” chief operating officer Paul O’Callaghan said.

The investment comes after Holcim’s main production line in Davao was damaged following the collapse of a silo. Soon after, the cement maker recommissioned a mothballed line in Davao to help supply the local market.

O’Callaghan Holcim would invest the money at a time when the industry was waiting for demand on the commodity to recover.

Cement demand has been soft since 1998, when the market slumped 13 percent following the Asian financial crisis. Demand in the next seven years had declined, except in 2002.

The outlook this year remains bleak despite recent announcements by government that it will pump-prime the economy with a more aggressive level of infrastructure spending.

The company said it continued to pursue programs aimed at improving efficiency and meeting world-class environmental standards.

The company allotted funds to keep even its closed lines in good working condition.

In addition to the Davao plant, the company operates fully integrated cement manufacturing facilities in La Union, Bulacan and Misamis Oriental. The Bulacan plant has an extra production unit with an annual capacity of 0.8 million ton that has also been shutdown since 1998.

“Continuing to invest in our spare capacity is what gives us confidence to adjust very quickly to positive changes in the demand landscape. The constant infusion of resources allows us to re-activate our shutdown line in Bulacan, just as we were able to bring into operations our Davao unit within a few months,” he said.

Investments by the company are also channeled toward updated state-of-the-art technology that ensures consistent quality cement. Environment and safety measures that go beyond complying with local regulations are supported with substantial resources.

Holcim Philippines is a member of the Holcim Group, one of the world’s leading suppliers of cement and aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel) and ready-mix concrete and asphalt including services. The group has majority and minority interests in more than 70 countries.

China to invest 1 BILLION DOLLAR in Davao

Davao City — Two Chinese businessmen publicly announced their intentions of investing in the province of Compostela Valley in Davao after conducting series of negotiations and explorations on the economic potentials of the said province.

Coming along with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Saturday morning during the president’s visit in the town of Compostela, the Chinese bared that $1 billion is about to be poured as investments for mining and telecommunication projects.

“We are conducting exploration activities at this time to really check how potential the area is.” said the Chinese investor referring to a certain area in the municipality of Maco where the former North Davao Mining had operated.

PGMA, as well, excitedly accompanied the Chinese investors and she herself announced the good news to the residents in Compostela Valley.

“You are very lucky to be getting $1 billion of investment out of the $4 billion that our Chinese investors will be pouring in the whole Philippines,” she said.

It’s worth noting that PGMA pushed for a revitalized mining act so as to maximize the mining potentials of some areas in the country and spur growth and development in the countryside by generating income and employment to the people.

The investors, this early, are still having negotiations with local counterparts as to how both parties will manage the planned investment.

In an interview, first district representative Manuel “Waykurat” Zamora expressed full support to PGMA’s plans of tapping and developing the mining sector in his province.

“ I was never against mining activities of large-scale mining companies as long as I am assured that the small scale miners could still thrive and even benefit from the presence of large scale companies.” Zamora said.

He also claimed that mining is one big potential of his province that needs to be tapped, managed properly, and be developed for the people of Compostela Valley in Davao.

DAR implements P2.7 Billion worth of projects in DAVAO

Davao City (30 August) — Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) XI Director Rodolfo Inson said the Department in Region XI has implemented some P2.7-billion worth of infrastructure projects coming from its five foreign assisted projects operating Davao wide, which had benefited around 103,000 agrarian reform beneficiaries and residents within the agrarian reform communities.

Envisioned by the Arroyo Administration to provide social services especially the poor sector. DAR had closely coordinated its efforts with the local government units as the latter likewise has provided local counterpart funds for the construction and establishment of badly needed structures such as farm-to-market roads, irrigation networks, post harvest facilities, bridges, potable water supply and other immediate needs of the community.

The World Bank assisted-Agrarian Reform Communities Development project (ARCDP) phases 1 & 2 which were implemented in the provinces of Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental has funded around P411,827,046 worth of infrastructure projects, reported DAR regional information officer Isidro Lalisan during the regular “ARENA-XI” radio forum aired over DXRP Radyo ng Bayan anchored by Josette Olivera and the Philippine Information Agency.

The Agrarian Reform Infrastructure Support Project (ARISP) phases 1, 1.5 & 2 and the Mindanao Sustainable Settlement Area Development (MINSSAD) funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JICA) with project areas in Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental has an allocation of P820 million.

The Agrarian Reform communities’ project (ARCP) of the Asian Development Bank implemented some P141 million worth of projects in the province of Davao del Sur and Davao City.

The Solar Power Technology Support (SPOTS) funded by the government of Spain has funded P173 million worth of projects in the province of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental.

The project’s basic feature is to provide electricity to agrarian reform communities to hasten economic and social activities in these areas that would result to better quality of life, according to Director Inson. Projects were undertaken in tandem with DPWH, NIA and LGUs for the provision of equipment and facilities, he added. (DAR-XI/PIA-XI)

Actually bai @malaysia, it doesn't mean nga kulelat na ang ubang malls because each mall in the country has it has its own standard operating procedure to follow. It happened that Ayala Center Cebu's S.O.P Manual on sustaining quality, environmental management and occupational health and safety was acknowledged by ISO. The 3 certification from ISO which was awarded to Ayala Center Cebu "is geared towards improving their internal business processes, the way they do quality business and how they deal with their customers. It is a set of disciplined processes to ensure that quality is always in everyone's job and customer is always first".

Basically, the management of each mall all over the Philippines have the same goal, but the only edge which Ayala Center Cebu has is the way they're running their business which is based on international standards that is recognized by ISO. Ayala Center Cebu had been working on this ISO Certification since 2004 and it was a long process invloving the tenants, customers, employees and the management in creating the mall's manual of operation. Afterwards, they applied for ISO Certification and the ISO people get to review of their manual, procedures etc. and also, ISO people get to observe when the manual is implemented and then, ISO people decides if they pass the standards being set or not. Many malls in our country have common S.O.P. but wala pa lang nila gipa-certify sa ISO....
