This device is great to custom build your own router system. It's cheap, runs Linux with several different firmware distributions available, excellent Broadcom compoments and it's relatively stable/reliable compared to quality commercial products. You can virtually do everything you want with it, i.e. just put on a more powerful version of the stock firmware, increase the signal power output, make it your primary router with 5 VLAN configurable ports, make it a node in an advanced WDS mesh network, wireless client connected to regular access point, ad-hoc networking, integrated captive portal for wireless hotspots, dedicated lan router and probably a lot more.
List of available firmware distribution:
- Linksys (Stock) [linksys.com] - Stock Linksys firmware with source available.
- Sveasoft [sveasoft.com] - Custom firmware with features and compatibilies not included in the stock firmware. Costs money.
- HyperWRT [hyperdrive.be] - Power boosted Linksys firmware with a limited set of added features
- OpenWRT [openwrt.org] - Minimal Linux firmware with support for add-on packages. Highly recommended.
- Ewrt [portless.net] - For hotspot operators, based on Sveasoft.
