A Texas chemical company has developed a molecular cement dissolver, Back-Set, as an alternative to acid for removing hardened concrete from tools, trucks, and other equipment. It uses an active ingredient found in sugar cane syrup. The product is not hazardous to equipment or workers, does not harm paint or produce fumes, and is biodegradable. The effects of sugar on concrete have been known for many years. In some parts of the world sugar is commonly used to retard the set of mortar and other cementious products. An article from as far back as the December, 1957 issue of CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION said, "Sugar affects both fresh and hardened concrete. Dry sugar has no effect on hardened concrete, but sugar solutions can be very corrosive." The article goes on to describe how hardened surfaces can help guard against these effects in candy factories and other susceptible areas.

    Ever tried the hammer?

None that I have known. I think it is not commercially feasible to produce chemicals to melt/soften rocks as there are many types of rocks around and each of them may have different chemical properties. Hydrochloric acid may help BUT only washes out/erodes rock surfaces as rocks don't easily absorb acid. Consult a petrologist to help you identify what sort of rocks is sensitive to a particular acid or chemicals.

There are also many types of cement... each of them have different chemical binders like asphalt or porcelain. If you're referring to construction cement or concrete, you may be able to soften it with a very strong acid (since cement is highly alkaline) such as Hydrochloric acid perhaps but then again it is more expensive to break it by acid than just hammer it out. Demolition companies would have used such chemicals to do the job than heavy equipment.

Exploring the realm of construction and masonry, the discussion on chemicals that can soften stones or concrete cement is a crucial aspect. While natural stone is revered for its durability, certain chemicals can be employed to modify its properties. Engineers and artisans often turn to specific substances that have the capacity to soften natural stone or concrete, allowing for easier shaping and carving. However, the careful consideration of the type of stone and the specific chemical used is paramount to ensure that the structural integrity is not compromised. This delicate balance between enhancing workability and preserving the inherent strength of natural stone underscores the nuanced approach taken by professionals in the field of construction and design.
