Stan Winston has died.

Winston was best known for his work for the "Terminator," "Jurassic Park" and "Predator" series, and Edward Scissorhands. The 3-time Oscar winner most recently worked on Iron Man and was special effects supervisor on the upcoming Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

Notable films with his imprint include Aliens, The Thing, Batman Returns, Artificial Intelligence: AI, and Constantine.

Terminator Salvation

Terminator Salvation is an upcoming science fiction action film set for release on May 22, 2009. Directed by McG, it is the fourth film in the Terminator franchise and stars Christian Bale as John Connor, Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor, Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese, and Sam Worthington as the new terminator Marcus Wright. The film is set in 2018, focusing on the original war between humanity and the Terminator computer network Skynet. It abandons the formula of the series (Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Model 101 Terminator time traveling to the present to protect or kill someone of future importance), and the film could be rated PG-13, unlike the other R-rated films. Filming began on May 5, 2008.

On May 23, 2008, Warner Bros. released the following plot summary for the film. The synopsis was modified on June 11, 2008:

“ Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a Terminator whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind. ”

James Middleton, the associate producer of the film, stated the film "[is] really about the birth of a new hero," and McG said that it will also be about the development of the Model 101 Terminator. He explained the film will "begin again very much in the spirit of what [Christopher] Nolan did with Batman," in that it will stand on its own without the original films, and that it is "a bit of a sequel and a prequel because it tells the story of how we got there."
