Once completed, this project in Metro Manila will surely become another tourist destination.

P1.2B Oceanarium Park to rise in Manila

The China Oceanis Group Ltd. (COGL), a Malaysian-Chinese consortium, will put up a walk-thru oceanarium at the back of the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park, Manila.

The planned oceanarium will showcase thousands of local marine species, dining facilities, maritime
discovery walk, and promenade areas. The consortium will also construct a bay pavilion featuring retail shops, restaurants, and a plaza for special events.

Under the three-phased plan, the oceanarium will be a 1.2 million gallon aquarium that will feature
marine life like sharks, stingrays, and other tropical fishes. It will have an acrylic walkthrough tunnel where people can have the experience of walking below the water with fish
    swimming all around them.

The second phase involves the creation of a sandy beach along the existing breakwater in the landside and the transformation of the water sea between the platform and the breakwater into a self-contained swimming pool area for the public.

The last phase is the development of the current park on the landside into an ocean discovery center.

The project is expected to be completed in one and a half years.Â*

and this just got out today...

    P1.1-B tourism project given perks

    By BERNIE CAHILES–MAGKILAT

Chinese-led China Oceanis Philippines Inc. was granted a package of pioneer incentives by the Board of Investments for its P1.1 billion-tourism project, which sought to transform the 1.2 hectare lot in Luneta into a state-of-the-art theme park.

Dubbed as the Manila Ocean Park, the project would be built on the existing 1.2-hectare Luneta Boardwalk Platform facing Manila Bay located at the back of the historical Quirino Grandstand.

The company had already signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) in April last year.

The theme park is slated to open in February 2008. It will provide jobs to 1,830 Filipinos.

Based on the plan, the envisioned Manila Ocean Park would consist of an Oceanarium, a Marine Discovery Park, Promenade areas, a Boardwalk and a Pavilion.

Based on its BoI application, the project hopes to serve two major tourism goals in the country: promoting the Philippines as a major tourist destination and provide both Filipinos and tourists with a grand "People’s Park".

The project is designed to support the thrust of the PTA and the City Government of Manila to revitalize the area.

The Oceanarium, the main attraction of the entire entertainment complex, is going to showcase several kinds of fishes including sharks, colorful tropical fishes and invertebrates indigenous to the Philippines.

Its facilities will have a transparent acrylic-made tunnel to provide visitors the experience of walking underwater and viewing the sea creatures.

It is expected to become a unique and world class educational and entertainment complex dedicated to showcase the rich and diverse marine life of the Philippine aquatic environment.

The Park will also feature the ‘Jungle Trek,’ ‘Seven Seas’ and the ‘Lost Atlantis.’

The Bay Pavilion would be a three-storey building occupying 15,566 square meter floor area. It will have retail shops, souvenir shops, restaurant facilities and a plaza for special shows and activities.

The top of the Pavilion will be an open-air area with especially designed tarpaulin roofing that will house a huge food court offering Filipino and Southeast Asian cuisines.

On the other hand, the Marine Discovery Park will be landscaped with fountains and marine life. This part of the theme park will be made available to the public for free.

The Manila Ocean Park project is a joint undertaking of Singaporean, Malaysian, Chinese and Australian proponents led by the China Oceanis Group.

The joint venture is committed to contribute to the development of Philippine tourism.

Furthermore, it supports the thrust of the Philippine government in preserving the environment, generating employment for the people and boosting the economy by bringing in tourism revenues and generating additional revenues for the government.

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter B. Favila cited the project for its huge potential in boosting the country’s economic activity.

"The project jibes well with the economic program of the city especially its ‘Buhayin ang Maynila’ program. Roxas Boulevard is lined up with first class visitor facilities and the upcoming theme park will be a big boost to the country’s tourism program which will cater to both local and foreign visitors," he said.

Undersecretary and BoI Managing Head Elmer C. Hernandez cited the project for not just being a capital intensive but also being a labor intensive one.

Hernandez said the BoI is biased to projects that generate not only investments but also to ventures that offer new jobs to the Filipino people. (BCM)
