according to eastern philosiphy,w/c includes karma & reincarnation; "there is no such thing as coincidence,accidents.luck or by chance, that everything has a meaning & purpose, & part of our progress is to realized that we are part of a bigger evolving plan, & that we need to align our thoughts & actions to the Laws of nature w/c creates the general order of things,
What you sow is what you reap, dont do unto others...., in every action ther is always opposite reaction, or KARMA w/c literally means both action & reaction. This unerring Law of Nature is ever operating w/ or w/o our knowledge,thus things happen to our lives whether favorable or not are but the fruits of our own labor,under this law (religion would like to call it god) we are invited to become conscious w/ our thoughts,thughts that will be transform into words,to action, to habit, then to destiny. so in a way the LAW OF NATURE provides us the venue & capacity to create or fashion our lives,.And according to this system of thought we punish or reward ourselves by virtue of our own KARMA or ACTION=RECTION.
